New York Times recently released “the 45 places to go in 2012” all over the world. And Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region located in China’s southwest part, ranked No. 9.

It is reported “Lhasa” like this by New York Times:

Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region’s holy capital is in the throes of a luxury-hotel boom. In Lhasa, this is news: not only is operating an upscale hotel at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level no small feat, but real-estate developments here are, almost by default, also culturally loaded.

The majestic, 162-room St. Regis Lhasa Resort has been in full operation since May. In 2010, a charming Tibetan-owned villa called the Lingtsang reopened as a boutique hotel with opulent, colorful woodwork and courtyard verandas. And coming soon are the sprawling InterContinental Resort Lhasa Paradise and the 284-room Shangri-La, both scheduled to open in 2013.

On the upside, it’s the first time that travelers can get high-end amenities in a city where even basic hospitality has been a challenge. On the downside, the openings — like Lhasa’s booming population, new business districts and shopping malls — are seen by many Tibetans and interested outsiders as more cultural colonization and exploitation of a sacred land.

The weeklong Spring Festival Holiday in China, from Jan 23 to Jan 28, has just finished.

One of the must-to-do things during the Spring Festival is setting off firecrackers. Have you ever calculated how many tons of firecrackers paper scraps left during the Spring Festival? Here is the result from Beijing’s environmental sanitation group: 183.7 tons (Xinhua News reported), nearly 184 tons left in the capital for the 7-day holiday!

However this was 3.09 less than that of 2011.

One Chinese family, on average, will spend hundreds of yuan on firecrackers for the Spring Festival or Chinese Lunar New Year, while some will spend more than 10000 yuan for the firecrackers spree for the celebration.

Setting off firecrackers was believed to be an effective way to dispel misfortune and evils in ancient time of China, and gradually it becomes a must for the whole Chinese during grand festivals or celebrations.
